Down syndrome (DS) is a genetic disorder caused when abnormal cell division results in extra genetic material for chromosome 21. This genetic disorder, which varies in severity, causes lifelong intellectual disability and developmental delays, and in some people it causes health problems. Early and ongoing interventions can greatly increase the outcomes of children and adults with this disorder and help them live fulfilling lives.

Children with fragile X syndrome do have impairment in theory of mind that is comparable, although slightly different, then the deficit reported in other groups with learning challenges such as Down syndrome.
Families should not be systematically advised to avoid bilingual exposure for their children with Down syndrome.
